The Agony of Stack Overflow

A forensic analysis of Stack Overflow's decline. How the rise of LLMs devalued the platform and drove away the experts sustaining the open-source ecosystem. I argue that the platform's community grew organically from its inception in 2008 until the shift in Q&A policies, at which point it began to decline, save for a slight bump in May 2020 due to the pandemic. Afterward, it continued its slow descent until the emergence of conversational AI, ChatGPT, which launched to the public in November 2022.

Introduction

Stack Overflow is a tech Q&A community where both beginners and the most seasoned experts have been participating since 2008.
Its impact became so massive that it was often said if this platform went down for even a moment, global technological progress and software support would nosedive.

This chart documents key milestones in the history of Stack Overflow. At first glance, you can easily spot how the vertical gap between the answers line (blue) and the questions line (red) has drastically narrowed—or in other words, it has reverted to its 2008 starting point. Compared to its historical peak in 2014, activity has plummeted by 98.1% over the last three years since the dawn of conversational AI, especially ChatGPT.
Stack Overflow is not a social network, even though its community and member interactions might feel like one. For some, it's a university—the ultimate hub to clear up software doubts across any language, ranging from its very first question about C#[2], to formatting an image in Word, or the classic centering a div.

TLDR

At its peak activity in the first quarter of 2014, it reached a monthly volume of 207,456 questions and a record 317,246 answers. Currently (late 2025 and early 2026), it is in a continuous downward spiral toward fewer than 5,000 questions per month.
The platform was launched in 2008. We analyzed its evolution from its inception up to January 2026 by querying the Stack Exchange Data Explorer (SEDE)[0]. We leveraged this database to extract the insights used in this analysis. I argue that the platform's community grew organically from its launch in 2008 until the shift in Q&A policies, at which point it began to decline. It saw a brief spike in May 2020 due to the pandemic, then resumed its gradual descent until the emergence of conversational AI, specifically ChatGPT, released to the public in November 2022. This catalyzed a freefall that had already been brewing since 2014, driven by a series of baffling corporate policies that ignored the user base and ultimately culminated in partnerships with major AI corporations. These companies hooked their systems straight into the Stack Overflow database, permanently altering the community landscape.

What Happened Before 2014?

The very first question on Stack Overflow dates back to July 31, 2008[2], which is where it all began. Since then, just over 24 million questions have been asked[3].

This first official question, shown in Figure 3, was answered that exact same day by another user, as seen in Figure 4. This was the core essence of the platform from its inception: solving developers' problems fast enough to implement those solutions in real-time. This dynamic was entirely disrupted by the instant gratification provided by conversational AI chats.

You can browse through the questions by understanding that the URLs number them sequentially at the /questions/{question_number} endpoint. Thus, the first question in Stack Overflow's history can be accessed simply by navigating to: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/4 . We can see that the question_number endpoint acts as the unique identifier. Questions 1, 2, and 3 are technically the first ones on Stack Overflow, but they aren't public because they were internal tests, as shown in Figure 5. If the question_number endpoint is <4<4, it redirects you to: "Oh where the joel data go". This refers to Joel Spolsky, a member of the founding team consisting of Joel Spolsky, Jeff Atwood, Geoff Dalgas, and Jarrod Dixon.

Stack Overflow from 2008 to 2014

In November 2008, Atwood made it crystal clear that Stack Overflow belongs to the programmers, not its creators. The guiding principle, coined "Stack Overflow Is You", was rooted in blind trust towards the community[4].
As Stack Overflow skyrocketed in popularity, the founders realized they couldn't just cram every tech-related question into a single hub without watering down the programming focus. To preserve the original platform's identity, they created two sister sites in 2009, forming a trilogy: Stack Overflow (strictly for programmers and code), Server Fault (for system administrators and server support—a more serious, infrastructure-focused tone), and Super User (for computer enthusiasts and general hardware/software troubleshooting, where the rules were slightly more relaxed). This segmentation didn't negatively impact the Q&A dynamic, as the charts clearly show.
As the platform scaled massively, the romanticized "trust the community" model stopped working on its own. Garbage questions, spam, and low-quality answers began piling up. The birth of the "Review Queues" emerged to prevent the platform from turning into a wasteland. Stack Overflow revamped its moderation policy[5]. Instead of relying on a handful of official moderators, they shipped tools to decentralize the workload. They empowered everyday users (with sufficient reputation) to rapidly vote, close, and delete posts through these review queues.
This established the modern golden rule: Stack Overflow is not a social forum[6]. Aggressive question-closing mechanisms were implemented to prevent extended discussions, enforcing the site's role as a "human computational grid" for direct Q&A.
Eventually, the beast became so uncontrollable that in 2014 it was split into several entities, giving birth to Meta Stack Overflow and Meta Stack Exchange[7].

The 2014 Turning Point

Let's jump back to the charts. From its inception, there's a clear upward trajectory in Q&A activity until 2014. That year, Stack Overflow overhauled its policies to filter and improve answer quality (a great summary can be found in the post: "The war of the closes" in [8] and [6]). This was the exact moment when strict constraints were placed on how both questions and answers were formulated. Looking at the graph, you can see the immediate aftermath of these policies: a sharp drop-off, though relatively well-absorbed by the community, which kept the momentum going, albeit at a slower pace.

You can also spot a recurring minor peak around March and April. This likely correlates with the peak productivity season in the Northern Hemisphere, where the largest cluster of users is concentrated (see map). The Brief COVID-19 Bump

The pandemic left an undeniable footprint on the community, visible across almost every chart. In May 2020, there was a noticeable spike, peaking at 186,550 questions and 241,418 answers. With almost everyone locked at home, a massive wave of people either learned to code or had to troubleshoot without a coworker sitting at the next desk. In hindsight, we can view this as a "dead cat bounce" (a false rebound) that temporarily masked the slow, organic decay the platform had been suffering since 2014.

Everything Changes in November 2022

When you asked something, like let's say, How do I center a Div?, assuming the post survived the strict formatting policies (i.e., it wasn't outright rejected), community members constantly monitoring the feeds would rush to answer to rack up points. The platform relied heavily on its reward system: user reputation and upvotes for the best answer. This process could take anywhere from a few minutes to several days. So, if someone had an urgent software blocker and relied on the community, they had to sit tight and wait. Often, that "answer" was just a request for more context, delaying the actual resolution even further.
With ChatGPT, that wait time was slashed to mere seconds—the time it takes for an LLM to spit out a response to any prompt, software architecture included.

November 2022: Stack Overflow's Abyss

By 2022, the "decline" (which had been brewing since 2014) accelerated, dropping off a cliff. Activity and several metrics plummeted abruptly. Exactly one year later (November 2023), the numbers had crashed to 50,511 questions and 66,594 answers—a staggering 54% collapse in just 12 months. Programmers simply stopped going to the Stack Overflow community to solve their roadblocks. Conversational AI offered instant answers without the hassle of navigating penalizations for poorly phrased prompts, struggling to format code blocks, or getting hit with the dreaded "This Question Has Already Been Answered" comment.

Reward Mechanisms

Stack Overflow allows users to upvote or downvote every answer. The users providing those answers are evaluated by their peers, which is the foundation of the reputation and voting system[11]. Votes act as a filter for developers searching through previously answered questions; naturally, the highest-voted answers generally bubble up as the best solutions.
A user's reputation grants them a certain degree of authority within their domain. It is the platform's way of rewarding the time and effort poured into helping others and elevating the overall quality of the ecosystem.

Votes (Upvotes/Downvotes) are the ultimate currency. After all, who hasn't landed on Stack Overflow and immediately searched for the answer with the green checkmark (the accepted, highest-voted answer), completely ignoring the rest?
At its peak, the platform boasted over 21,800 active voting users every month. Today, barely 4,000 people bother to cast a vote. If nobody votes, the gamification and reward system breaks down, leaving developers and contributors with zero incentive to spend their valuable time debugging strangers' problems and writing comprehensive answers.

The Ignored Questions

When charting the time elapsed between when a question is asked and when it gets an answer, there is a clear, unmistakable upward trend (see Figure 10). In the early days of the platform, nearly 100% of questions received an answer. Fast forward to early 2026, and almost half of all questions are left hanging in the void.

The Pivot

Users visiting the platform don't necessarily have to post new questions; most simply consume existing ones. Perhaps because of this, the platform has pivoted. Knowing that the novelty niche has dried up, the current behavior is strictly consuming archived knowledge or asking hyper-specific edge-case questions.

The "How to..." Questions

Take the term "How..." as an example. Platforms like Stack Overflow used to be the go-to place for fundamental "how-to" queries—like the legendary "How to center a div?".
In 2019, a staggering 41,337 questions per month contained the word "How". Today, in January 2026, that number has dwindled to a mere 272.

Average Question Length

Another fascinating metric is the average question length (measured in characters), which has skyrocketed in recent years. Looking at this parameter (see Figures 11 and 12), it's hard to definitively pinpoint what's happening under the hood, but two plausible conclusions emerge:
  • Either Stack Overflow is now exclusively a battleground for complex, highly elaborate problems that simple AI prompts can't solve,
  • Or users are now drafting their questions inside a conversational AI and then copy-pasting the verbose output straight into Stack Overflow.
The average question length has been steadily climbing over time, as shown in Figures 11 and 12. A few years ago, the monthly average sat at 343 characters. By December 2025, it shattered records, hitting a massive 2,770 characters per question on average.

Another clue hinting at AI-generated user behavior (keep in mind Stack Overflow forged strategic alliances with Google[12] and OpenAI[13]) lies in analyzing the monthly average question length against the average answer length, as illustrated in Figure 13.

The correlation between the two is incredibly high, and both metrics have surged since November 2022 (the ChatGPT era). However, the counter-theory remains valid: it could just be that only insanely complex problems are brought to Stack Overflow nowadays, naturally demanding equally massive and complex answers.
I personally argue that there are AI agents acting behind these essays posing as questions and answers.
Another massive correlation exists between the length, the monthly average of questions, and the percentage of unanswered questions, as shown in Figure 14.
As the absolute volume of questions tanked to an all-time low, the rate of ignored questions skyrocketed to an all-time high (January 2026).

This is likely because the few remaining experts on the platform are turning a blind eye to problems that demand too much cognitive overhead. It's also entirely possible that the vast majority of standard questions have already been answered somewhere in Stack Overflow's colossal historical archive.

The Bot Invasion

While question creation is in freefall, user account creation exploded overnight. The historical peak for new users hit in April 2024, with a mind-bending 880,000 new accounts registered in a single month. This does not correlate whatsoever with the nosedive in questions and answers; rather, it aligns perfectly with the corporate partnerships struck with Google and OpenAI.
It is highly probable that these are bot accounts, scraping and harvesting data without contributing a single byte of new knowledge to the ecosystem—essentially strip-mining it to extinction.

The Brain Drain

If we analyze the churn rate of high-reputation users (>1000> 1000), we can see the platform has accumulated a loss of roughly 284,000 users who have gone dark (LastAccessDate). Out of these, a staggering 72,388 are high-reputation profiles (the Power Users). It's safe to say these were the "elders" holding the community and forums together, whether to rack up bounty points or out of a genuine desire to help others.
The Stack Overflow incentive system has likely been broken beyond repair.

Every new iteration of an LLM (like Gemini 1.5) or events like the Stack Overflow moderator strike have been fatal blows. Two key catalysts, however, are the partnerships with Google Cloud and OpenAI to share the data generated by humans, experts, interacting as a community, offering it to these tech giants to train their models. In other words, Stack Overflow leveraged the information generated by its community and the dynamic established over years by human beings, only to sell it to the massive conglomerates training their LLMs—the very same entities that caused the agony of Stack Overflow as we knew it. A move that leaves many questions hanging. Another 60% crash in less than a year. Far from breathing life back into the community, the partnership announcements with Google Cloud and OpenAI (effectively selling user data) seemingly enraged the core demographic (the "Power Users"). Instead of driving new traffic, they fast-tracked the silent strike of the experts who generated the content.
